Stress, Corttisol, Mind and Skin

We all feel stressed from time to time. It is even a vital mechanism in our bodies to alert from danger.

But many times we are just stressed, not because of danger. Continuing stress can be very harmful to us.

Stress raises the cortisol hormone, which is responsible for several regulations in our bodies. The immune system is weakened, gut and skin dysbiosis can come up.

High levels of Cortisol, and depends on the severity level,  can cause several different impacts:

  • Rapid weight gain mainly in the face, chest, and abdomen contrasted with slender arms and legs
  • A flushed and round face
  • High blood pressure
  • Osteoporosis
  • Skin changes (bruises and purple stretch marks)
  • Muscle weakness
  • Mood swings, which show as anxiety, depression or irritability
  • Increased thirst and frequency of urination.
  • For women, periods can become irregular and might impact fertility.

  • Our skin can show signs of stress in different ways.

Dry skin and wrinkles are the common ones. Acne and bags under eyes can take place, too, aggravating by stress,  and some other unwelcomed symptoms, like eczema and psoriasis.

Especially in such stressful days, what should you do?

The first thing is awareness of being stressed.

Take actions to reduce stress, find your peaceful moments, this can be an unstressed sport, friends time, meditation, etc.  Change the mindset of how you perceive your daily events.

Make sure you consume enough vitamins and minerals through your food or supplements.

Take care of your skin to reduce the external symptoms and have an impact outside to the inside. Drink enough water.

Forest bathing, a Japanese term for nature time, spending time in the woods is a proven method to reduce stress.

Take enough sleep.
